When I speak to photographers in workshops or presentations, I tell them the most important thing you need to be aware of is Light. I always reinforce this by saying:

A boring subject in great light will always make a better photo than a great subject in boring light.

Light can be anywhere, and sometime, any old light will do, be it from a window, a flashlight, candle, or in this case, a sodium lamp outside the bar / restaurant parking lot where my son & I had just finished polishing off a couple cheeseburgers. Stepping outside, I could see the streetlight pouring onto the front tree, while the background trees only caught a little of the light, and where basking in the softer evening light.

If you see a difference in they type of light, what we call an edge of light or where two types of light meet, (i.e. shadow, sunlight & shade, warm & cool) that’s often the best time to grab a camera and see what happens.
