Le Conte Waterfall is located along the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. This shot of the rainbow in the mist and spray of LeConte Fall was taken after an eight mile hike out of Tuolumne Meadows, passing by several other waterfalls along the way. Most folks who make the long hike to see these waterfalls often backpack in and stay at the Yosemite Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp which is several miles upstream. In early summer the meltwater from the mountains races down the Tuolumne River. As it reaches the top of LeConte Fall, the water cascades down a slick granite apron. When the water rushes down the sloping rock and hits an obstacle, the powerful force of the water sends huge plumes of spray and mist flying up into the sky, forming what's called a waterwheel. Downstream from LeConte Fall is another waterfall actually called Waterwheel Fall. Most hikers who reach this waterfall see all the amazing waterwheels and think they've reached the end of their hike. The difference is that LeConte Fall has many waterwheels, while the real Waterwheel waterfall that's a mile further downstream is so named because it has only one waterwheel, albeit a real big one.
