One of the most popular hikes in all of Yosemite National Park is the hike up the Mist Trail. After passing Vernal Fall, the next step on what's called the Grand Staircase of the Merced River is a climb to the top of Nevada Fall. Nevada Fall is notable in Yosemite because after plunging off the edge of a cliff, the waters of the Merced River crash into the granite wall, causing the water to continuing it's cascade down toward Yosemite Valley.

If you opt not to hike back down the Mist Trail, you can follow the John Muir Trail back toward Yosemite Valley to complete a very worthy loop hike. After a short distance past Nevada Fall you come to this beautiful vista location. The prominent sunlit peak in the background is a granite pluton called Liberty Cap. On the left side of the frame about halfway up Liberty Cap is Mount Broderick. Behind Mount Broderick can be seen the smooth granite backside of Half Dome.
