UPCOMING PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS, PHOTO TOURS, & CLASSES

I’m teaching a number of wonderful photography classes and photo workshops coming up:

February 9-11, 2018

So many times photographers shoot a location with a run-n-gun attitude, photographing one location, then moving on to another, then another, then another. But there is also much to be gained by spending an extended period of time shooting the same location. With differences in light, weather, and other subtle changes, visiting the same place over several days teaches us to push the envelope of our personal vision and comfort zone. This rustic, location-centric photo retreat incorporates guided shoots in the field and classroom presentations. The field sessions will focus on taking a visual assessment of subject and lighting conditions or looking for the more subtle subject matter, and how best to photographically capture subjects through composition, use of camera settings, and lens selection. We will also spend time learning how to work on images after-capture, including editing and post-processing using programs like Lightroom and Photoshop. Class presentations will cover topics like developing a strong personal vision and digital imaging. Photographers of all skill levels from amateur to experienced are welcome, but will especially well-suited to those seeking a better understanding of using their equipment or refining skills to help you see a better photo while in the field. The workshop will conclude with a group photo review and critique of images taken over the weekend. (Class will involve some short-distance light hiking over slightly uneven terrain along dunes and sandy beaches.)

Point Reyes: Intimate Details & Personal Vision 3-Day Photo Workshop

April 20-22, 2018

This special class is for those photographers who want to leave the grand landscapes behind and train their eyes and cameras on the smaller, more intimate details of the world around us. This class uses both field and classroom presentations designed to hone and refine how to shoot evocative and compelling photos that highlight our personal connection to a subject, whether it’s something natural or man-made. Intimate and detailed doesn’t just mean small, tiny, or close-up macro photos. We will also explore how we use our vision to recognize and isolate important aspects of scenes and locations. Focus on the field sessions will be on taking a visual assessment of subjects and lighting conditions, looking for subtle subjects, and how best to photographically capture those scenes through composition, use of camera settings, and lens selection. Class presentations will cover topics like developing a strong personal vision and incorporating detailed subject matter into a visual repertoire. We will also spend time learning how to work on images after-capture, including editing and post-processing using programs like Lightroom and Photoshop. The workshop concludes with a photo critique and review of the work that was created over the weekend. Accommodations are included at the Historic Lifeboat Station.

Why take a photo workshop, class, or tour from me?

I love teaching and working with people on a close and intensive basis. I find out what you want to learn, or what you are having trouble with, then I custom-tailor an experience to focus on your priorities. In most cases, workshops will also include a portfolio review of your existing shots, and a review of images taken in the field.

I’ve been leading private workshops and tours for more than 10 years. Prior to that, I spent nearly a decade assisting and helping to instruct students in more that thirty of Galen Rowell’s Mountain Light Photo Workshops while he was based in Berkeley and Emeryville.

If you would like to find out more about hiring me for yourself or a small group, please contact me by phone or email.
