A note about the images: These weather photos, pictures of clouds, and sky images speak directly to my interest in the atmosphere and how it helps to create some of the most beautiful and special light and natural lighting effects. As a landscape photographer, I am always looking toward and watching the sky and clouds or weather to see what photographic potential might be available for catching a mix of atmospheric images that capture some of that natural beauty.

Some of the best weather photos capture those special moments that trace back to the very origins of our written human history, religion, and art. From the first people that looked as the sun moved across the sky, the sunset and darkness fell over the landscape. The Sun was the first and most important God. This was followed closely by the moon and its monthly cycles of waxing and waning. Lightning bolts were the weapons of Zeus in Greek mythology. The rainbow became a symbol in the Bible as a promise from God after the Great Flood to never reign/rain down such torment on the inhabitants of the earth again. Fog and mist always have an ethereal and mystical atmospheric effect that gives both a spooky or intimate feeling. Optical effects and natural phenomena like sun pillars, solar arcs, solar and lunar eclipses, and the Spectre of the Broken all give rise to a spiritual atmosphere and context. There is also a photo of the Green Flash at sunset picture.

This Weather Photos Gallery includes these types of Cloud, Sky, Sun, and Moon Pictures:

Atmospheric natural optical effects include rainbows, which can always be found under the right light and rain conditions by looking at a 43-degree angle away from the anti-solar point. Other natural optical atmospheric effects include 22-degree solar halos, fogbows, circumzenithal arcs, iridescent clouds, and crepuscular rays.
