It’s hard to believe when something so big has been reduced by so much over time that suddenly there’s only one left. Today, AP reported on the passing of the second to last U.S. WWI vet, aged 108. His caregiver described Harry Landis as “so full of life” and that his passing was unexpected. Now there is only One Left from World War One. As anti-war as I am, I have the utmost respect and admiration for those who have served and sacrificed for our country. It’s not Memorial Day, but it doesn’t have to be a holiday to think about, or say thanks to our vets.

I should also note the AP story mentions that the last survivor of the Spanish American War died in 1992. My hope for the future is that by the time the last survivor of “the War on Terror” passes, the planet will be a war-free zone.

i have this fascination with lineage as well, and was looking up WWI survivors a few months ago. what i find fascinating is that there are some folks still alive that could have theoretically met old historical figures such as Teddy Roosevelt. And Roosevelt likely could have known some Revolutionary War heros in his lifetime. so the lineage of our country could literally be traced back to a minimum of two generations.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks much for sharing this … I had no idea so little WW1 vets were still alive.
