Picture: Sun bursts through storm clouds in the Los Padres National Forest, Monterey County, California
In my previous post I shared some images that were taken on my first photo outing of 2016. As I previously noted, this was a much-needed trip for me as my 2015 had been exceedingly light on photography for a number of reasons. I was in a desperate need of something special to reignite the spark of desire and passion after having spent months away from the foremost thing that photographers are meant to do; Take Pictures.
So on my first venture back to the great outdoors, I was greeted with a wall of unbroken gray skies. All I could do was utter the prayer of outdoor photographers everywhere when gloomy skies abound: “Oh, to just give me one little break…”.
Then, as if on cue, a small break appeared in the clouds off to the west as the sun neared the horizon.
What followed next was one of the most special dances of light that I’ve seen in awhile. Rather than just re-sparking my desire to be back outdoors and shooting again, it was more like gasoline being dumped on a fire. I was literally dancing for joy at this wonderful gift of nature as I celebrated the release from my dark times, now basking in the relief of being back in the light. It really was a magical and special moment.
I’d love to know which is your favorite image? If so, please leave a comment below to let me know which one you like the most.

Welcome back Gary! I love your photography and glad you are doing what you love doing and are so good at. I love all the images but number 5 is my favorite because of the golden light.
Best regards, Brian
Image 4 is my favorite
Great post and wonderful photos. I like #6 – the one you led with.
I like 2 and 6
All are great Gary but I think I like #4 the most.
As always Gary your photos are excellent. Like Ced I like the gold in #6 but I spent more time studying #7. The sharp edge of the ridge line with the relatively sharp edge of the clouds to mask most of the sun and the upper thinner clouds filtering the light give the picture an elliptical feeling, maybe as if you are looking into Mother Nature’s eye. But she must of had a rough time with that much red eye!
Love the lens compression in No.4, although all are great. Congrats on your return, and nature’s ‘welcome back!’
#7 is my favorite. I Love your photographs especially the most recent Sunset over SF. Keep it up!
