Picture: For Sale sign on the California Coast, Shelter Cove, Humboldt County, California
On my first visit to Shelter Cove about seven years ago, I took this image of a For Sale sign stuck right in the middle of this prime waterfront lot. This was a great example of the feeling I had as I drove around town. Now we’re talking a very small, extremely isolated town, nearly 45 minutes from the nearest real supermarket. Yet there were dozens upon dozens of For Sale signs all over the place. The housing boom was erupting in full force.
This year when I returned to Shelter Cove, I noticed several things. First, there was still an amazing number of For Sale signs around the town. Many on undeveloped lots, and many in front of beautiful coastal homes. Except where I took the above photo, there was no For Sale sign, and the lot was still undeveloped. Maybe the land was slipping back into the ocean too quickly to warrant building a home, or perhaps someone in town thought it was better to keep this small piece of California’s coast intact and left alone. Whatever the reason, I was happy to see it still undeveloped.
And speaking of (re-)building, I’ve spent the last week toying with starting to update some parts of my web site. A project that, like this lot, has remained unattended for too long. But for now, you can see more of my North Coast images in my online gallery.
That is certainly a stuning location Gary. You probably could have thrown the sign off and it would be attributed to wind or something if it’s that neglected.
