Dawn moon snowy Yosemite Valley
Photo: Moon over snow-covered Yosemite Valley at dawn, Yosemite National Park, California
After waking in the cold dark of my campsite, I began driving through Yosemite Valley planning to find a good location to shoot the sunrise. The night before, there was a cold seasonal storm that had blanketed the Sierra with several feet of snow in the highest elevation mountain. In Yosemite Valley, snow covers the valley floor on a much less frequent basis due to the lower elevation, so I knew this could be a special morning. I hadn't gotten very far out of the campground when I rounded a corner near the east end of the valley to see the moon hanging between breaking clouds in the early dawn light. I stopped my truck and sat for a moment thinking if I should take the time to shoot this scene, or press on an continue down the valley to concentrate on catching the early sunrise light that would be happening behind me. It only took a few moments of mental debate, but I knew I had to shoot this cold, winter blue-hour scene. I'm glad I did, and even though I missed the prime sunrise moment further down the valley, seeing the snow and the mist mixed with the moonlight coming through the clouds told me I had made the right choice.
