Jefferey Pine on Sentinel Dome
Photo: Sunset light through storm clouds on the old Jefferey Pine atop Sentinel Dome, Yosemite National Park, California
This shot is of the iconic old Jefferey Pine which sat atop Yosemite National Park's Sentinel Dome, not far from Glacier Point. This tree was originally made 'famous' in a photograph by Ansel Adams. Many photographers followed in his footsteps to take the short hike to the top of Sentinel Dome to make their own rendition of this tree. Even after the tree died, as it appears in this shot, it still made for an iconic shot with its unique shape. This tree stood like this for decades, until 2003 when a group of young Japanese tourists decided to take a group photo sitting on the top branches. The dead tree could not support their weight and broke into pieces.
