Last Light on Half Dome Olmsted Point
Photo: Sunset light on Half Dome from Olmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, California
This shot of Half Dome is taken from Olmsted Point along Tioga Pass Road in the high country of Yosemite National Park. This is also one of the more popular scenic pullouts in the area just west of Tenaya Lake. The view here is looking toward Half Dome as it sits above the steep granite cliffs of Tenaya Canyon. In fact, Tenaya Canyon is so steep that the National Park Service actively discourages people from hiking in this canyon due to the number of deaths and injuries that have occurred there. This photo shows the very last moments of sunset light as it reaches the summit of Half Dome, lighting up an area known as The Visor - a rock outcrop that protrudes from the top of the exfoliating dome.
