Merced River & El Capitan Yosemite Valley
Photo: Morning light on trees along the Merced River in spring below El Capitan, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California
The Merced River flows through all of Yosemite Valley, here passed beneath the huge granit monolith known as El Capitan, on of Yosemite National Park's most famous landmarks. The summit of El Capitan towers 3,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and the Merced River. In this view which is taken near the western edge of the El Capitan Meadow looks toward the sloping eastern side of El Capitan, in the area where the seasonal Horsetail Fall waterfall would appear. (in fact, you can just see Horsetail Fall in this image as a little ribbon of silver just near the top of El Capitan.) The green trees and forest on both sides of the Merced River make a nice natural balance to the cool color of the granite rock wall and the reflection coming of the water.
