Half Dome Cliff Detail Yosemite
Photo: Trees on rocky ledge of cliff on Half Dome at sunset, Yosemite National Park, California
Looking up toward Half Dome from the west end of Yosemite Valley, it's easy to see just how huge, large, and imposing Yosemite National Park's most famous iconic monolith really is. From the base of Yosemite Valley, the summit of Half Dome is more than three thousand feet up, of which over a thousand feet is made of sheer, nearly vertical granite rock cliff face that attracts some of the best rock climbers in the world. While many landscape photos taken in Yosemite Valley show the entire face of Half Dome, on this particular day there was a storm causing the entire top of the mountain to be hidden in the clouds. So instead, I focused on a small section of the massive cliff face just below the shoulder of Half Dome, trying to emphasize the detail of the geology. Here the trees stand as temporary sentinels beneath the seemingly timeless rock face. The black streaks that run down the vertical rock are water streaks.
