Glacial Erratic Boulder on Polished Granite
Photo: Glacial Erratic boulder on glacial polish granite rock at Olmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, California
Yosemite National Park is like a geological wonderland with all its magnificent examples of Sierra Nevada granite that makes up so many of the mountains. Olmsted Point along Tioga Pass Road is a popular turnout where tourists can walk on the hard Sierra granite rock that has been rubbed smooth due to glaciation, leaving behind a smooth veneer on the rock called glacial polish. As the glaciers that moved through Yosemite National Park during the last Ice Age retreated back up the granite canyons, they would deposit rocks that had tumbled onto the surface of the glacier. As the glacier melted or retreated away, these orphaned granite boulder became what's called a glacial erratic, a lone stone left behind. There are a number of these glacial erratic rocks that sit upon the smooth glacially polished granite rock as you stroll around Olmsted Point and many other similar areas throughout Yosemite National Park.
