Yosemite National Park has a vast range of elevation, from just over 13,000 feet at the summit of Mount Lyell to around 4,500 feet in Yosemite Valley. When winter rolls around, people think that winter in the Sierra Nevada means any place in the mountains gets covered in snow. But that's not the case in Yosemite Valley, where the elevation is only half that of most Sierra ski resorts. It takes a real cold wet storm to bring enough snow to coat the floor of Yosemite Valley in snow. But on the several occasions when that happens each winter or spring, it truly turns Yosemite Valley into a magical winter wonderland. In this image, which was shot in April, the winter blanket of snow that coats the trees and meadows may only last a mere few hours after the storm clears and the sun comes back out.
