Horsetail Fall is a small seasonal waterfall located on the eastern flank of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Yosemite National Park has many notable waterfalls, some of which run year-round, and others, like Horsetail Fall, and even the great Yosemite Falls, only flow part of the year until their respective water basin dries up and the waterfall ceases to be. Such is the case especially with Horsetail Fall, which is a waterfall with a very small watershed on the top of El Capitan.

My old boss, Galen Rowell, took a famous shot of Last Light on Horsetail Fall back in the early 1970's. In February, the sunset light passes through a narrow venue so that the last rays of sunset light up only the water in the waterfall, and the cliffs on either side of Horsetail Fall remain in dark shadows. This special light and shot became one of Galen's best known photos. Since that time, it has become a near circus-level attractions as hundreds of photographers flock to two small areas in Yosemite Valley, trying to catch that special sunset light on Horsetail Fall.
