Sunset light on Half Dome, Yosemite

Sunset light on Half Dome from Olmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, California - ID# YOS1-08
Half Dome, the primary landscape icon of Yosemite National Park, is viewed from Olmsted Point along Tioga Pass Road. This image is one of my earliest Yosemite portfolio photos, taken many years ago using film. One of the reasons that the sunset light on Half Dome, especially on the sheer vertical cliffs which make up the face of Half Dome, are so warm and colorful was that on this evening there was lots of smoke in the atmosphere because of forest fires in other nearby areas of the Sierra Nevada mountains. By the time the sunset light made it to Half Dome here in Yosemite National Park, the smoke had caused the light to turn an extra rich shade of yellow and gold. In fact, the band of light orange in the sky above the bright yellow is actually smoke from the fires.
