Lenticular Cloud Sunset Tioga Pass
Photo: Lenticular cloud at sunset reflected in an alpine tarn at Tioga Pass, Yosemite National Park, California
Lenticular clouds, also known as Sierra Wave clouds, are an incredible sight to see as they build over the high mountain peaks along the Sierra Nevada. Since they are often towering quite high in the sky, they catch the great reddish colored light of sunset which is called Alpenglow. On this evening, I was lucky to be approaching Tioga Pass on the eastern side of Yosemite National Park. Here there are a number of tiny lakelets known as alpine tarns which I was able to use as a foreground subject to balance against the beautiful sunset color of these lenticular clouds.
