Half Dome at Sunset from Olmsted Point
Photo: Sunset light on Half Dome from Olmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, California
Yosemite National Parks best known iconic mountain, Half Dome, is seen here bathed in the golden light of sunset, viewed from Olmsted Point. Located along Tioga Pass, this wonderful viewpoint nestled in the heart of Yosemite's Sierra Nevada High Country sits at the top of Tenaya Canyon, which sloped down toward Yosemite Valley and the base of Half Dome. This telephoto view of Half Dome shows the sheer granite vertical cliffs which are the result of geology and glaciation that created the now famous rock face. To the left is the subdome, where hikers heading to the summit of Half Dome first need to ascend via a steep series of narrow rock switchbacks. The Cables Route up to the summit of Half Dome climb up the area in the dark shadow area just beyond the subdome.
