Sunset light on Clouds Rest, Yosemite
Photo: Sunset light on Clouds Rest from Olmsted Point, Yosemite National Park, California
The summit of Clouds Rest in Yosemite National Park is almost at 10,000 feet above sea level in the heart of the Sierra Nevada. This image, taken from the Olmsted Point scenic vista viewpoint along Tioga Pass Road shows Clouds Rest bathed in the beautiful last sunset light known as alpenglow, which is an incredibly pinkish red hue as the light from the setting sun travels through the most atmosphere just as the sun is near the horizon, making the sunset light redder and redder. One thing Clouds Rest is known for is its huge sweeping granite face that decends down toward the base of Tenaya Canyon. In fact, Clouds Rest has one of the singularly longest continuous slopes of granite in North America, covering nearly 6,000 feet in length.
