Golden Storm Light on El Capitan, Yosemite Valley
Photo: Golden sunset light through storm clouds on El Capitan, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California
This image of golden sunset light on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley still ranks as one of the most amazing displays of special Sierra Nevada light. Yosemite National Park is part of Range of Light where mountains and atmospheric conditions create incredible photographic moments. On this particular afternoon, I was at the famed Tunnel View vista point as huge thunderstorm clouds towered over the Sierra. The skies were clear to the west over the Central Valley and coast. As the sun set in the west, that golden sunset light hit the storm clouds head on, and lit them from the top with this incredible golden light. That light shined down through the clouds, lighting everything in sight with this amazing golden glow of sunset light. Then a small break in the clouds appeared, and a beam of sunlight landed directly on El Capitan, lighting up one of Yosemite Valley's prominent geological landmarks. (This was shot on film, and yes, it really did look like this.)
