About these photos of Cancun, the Maya Riviera, and other locations on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

These pictures are from a variety of popular tourist locations on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The most popular of these locations is Cancun, where many visitors and tourists stay in the area known as the Hotel Zone. This seven-mile strip of land is where most of the resort hotels and tourist attractions are located.

Just offshore from Cancun is a popular, yet not over-crowded destination of Isla Mujeres, Island of the Women. Most tourists and visitors opt to visit Isla Mujeres as a day trip from Cancun. The easiest way to get to Isla Mujeres is by taking the ferry from one of Cancun’s three ferry terminals, the largest being Gran Puerto north of Cancun. Great places to visit on the island include Playa Norte and Punta Sur.

The Maya Riviera runs from the area south of Cancun near Puerto Morales and continues south along the coast. At the heart of the Maya Riviera is the popular city of Playa del Carmen. Known for its beaches and popular tourist center, Playa del Carmen has a much more relaxed feeling than the much larger Cancun. Offshore from Playa del Carmen is the island of Cozumel, which is a world-famous area for scuba diving along its magnificent reefs.

One of the most popular tourist destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula is the Mayan city of Chichen-Itza. Home to one of the largest Mayan temples, the Temple of Kukulcan, Chichen-Itza can be visited on a day trip from either Cancun or Playa del Carmen. We took a tour from Playa del Carmen which included a visit to a cenote and the city of Valladolid.

Other popular tourist spots on the Maya Riviera include the city of Tulum with its Mayan Ruins set right along the coast. The nearby town of Akumal is considered on of the best spots for swimming with sea turtles. There are some environmental concerns about the beach and reef safety, so if you visit, please wear reef-safe sunscreen.
