Picture: Surfer riding the breaking waves below coastal rock in fog at Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur Coast, Monterey County, California
This image was chosen as photo of the month as it reminded me of our local extremes. Last month we had a pretty good heat wave, so my family and I took a day trip to the coast, where the cool ocean fog had temperatures almost 35 degrees cooler than our house, only 25 miles away. When most people think of surfing, they think of warm sunny blue sky days, typical of an Endless Summer. Well, not so here in Northern California; there’s a reason Mark Twain was known to say that the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. Now I don’t surf, but I know that up here, the ocean is pretty darn cold, and with the fog and wind, there’s nothing warm about what these people do for hours a day.
As usual, as a Photo of the Month, there is a 50% discount on any Limited Edition Prints. You can also see more of my Big Sur Coast area photos in my online web gallery.
