Photo: Evening light at Baytowne Wharf Village, Sandestin Resort, Destin, Florida
I got back home late Sunday evening from my whirlwind week in Destin, Florida where I’d been for the 2008 NANPA Annual Conference. I knew from my experience that the schedule during the conference wouldn’t allow for much photography. This was the thought that stayed with me when I realized my tripod wouldn’t fit in the suitcase, and I decided to leave it home. In fact, I figured I was really taking the camera just to take pictures during the plane ride. Therefore, I wouldn’t need a tripod, right?
As it turned out, I did get a chance to wander the property one evening. I took the opportunity to live out the experience as a self-induced challenge. You see, back in December I taught a private photo workshop client, and we spent the whole day learning how to shoot (well) without a tripod. One main lesson I tried to get across during that workshop was “find anything you can to brace your camera on”. In the photo above, I braced the camera between the top slats of a chair just like the one in the photo. I then knelt into the chair and pushed the camera forward using my body weight to help eliminate any movement during the shot. This image was shot at a 1 second long exposure at ISO 100.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for an upcoming review of the conference.
Great shot Gary. It looks like a heck of a resort to spend time in.
