Picture: Sunset over Lands End as seen from Baker Beach in the Presidio, San Francisco, California
Like watching the sunset over a distant shore; I’m delighted (and relieved) to say that the sun has finally set on my latest book project, Photographing California; Volume One – North. Two weeks ago today, the book finally went to press. That means all the corrections that could be made were made. Anything missed will be enshrined in print. And simply, there is no other work I can do before the cold hard book hits the warmth of human hands and bookshelves everywhere.
I guess my only job now will be to get the promotion game going to let people know about the book. All in due course, of course. The book should be available for purchase during the holidays.
I just want to give a quick shout of Thanks to my family, foremost, for their love and support (read: putting up with me) while I slaved away. At just over 400 pages, this is the closest I feel I’ll ever come to producing something akin to a doctoral thesis – unless I go to Law School. I also want to say a public Thank You to my Publisher, Laurent Martres for trusting me with this project, and part of his “Photographing” series of books. I also want to give a special shout of thanks to the photographers that helped me with this project. In crediting contributing photographers, it was very important that their names and web site URLs appear in the very front of the book, and not buried in the back matter. Thanks also to Laurent for making that request happen.
So what did I do when the book finally hit the presses? I got the heck outta Dodge, and headed to the Sierra for some needed R&R, and new photo making.
I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the book later, but for now, yes; I’m happy as a bear licking honey to have this project finally wrapped up.
Now, it’s on to some new adventures.

Looking forward to the book, Gary. 400 pages sounds massive!
Congratulations on having it all finished. I’ve been hearing from time to time all the work you’ve been doing on it. Look forward to seeing it. Very exciting…
Congratulations Gary! I can’t wait to get a copy for myself and see what it’s all about. I’m sure your hard work will show through.
