Picture: Horsetail Falls, Desolation Wilderness, near Lake Tahoe, California
Many Californian’s, especially those from the Bay Area and Sacramento have seen this waterfall, but very few have actually been to it. This was waterfall that I mention in my last post, “Does this ever happen to you?”
If you’re heading west from South Lake Tahoe, you’ve also no doubt seen this waterfall. When you’re driving around the corner and heading down hill just past Camp Sacramento, this waterfall stands like a glistening landmark seen year-round above Highway 50 near Twin Bridges.
The trail to this waterfall is rated as moderate, despite being a relatively short mile and a half to the base of the falls. You can continue on up the slope, but at this point the trail becomes much more difficult. Like Yosemite, they post warnings that the area is dangerous, and there have been numerous deaths by people slipping on the wet or polished granite.
And yes, I did have to get the ‘Big Picture’ before spending a bunch of time photographing the many small detail shots that I came away with.

Beautiful image, Gary! I like this a lot…that’s a really pretty falls.
Great shot. It makes me want to sit on that granite all day long.
I like this rendition of that falls, accentuating the warm tones in the rocks, and complete with complimentary color in the splash of last sun at the top.
