Moon balanced on rock Tioga Pass
Photo: Full moon setting over rock outcrop along the Sierra Crest, near Tioga Pass, California
After shooting this nearly full moon as it hung over the mountains of the Sierra Nevada near Tioga Pass, I had a vision of trying to find a good location to photograph the full moon just as it started to set behind a mountain. As the moon got lower and lower in the sky, I kept moving my position trying to anticipate where it would eventually meet the ground. That's when I noticed this one significant rock outcrop on the side of a mountain. I had a vision of the moon balancing on this rock in the same manner that a seal would balance a ball on its nose in a circus.
After finding exactly the right spot to shoot from, all I needed to do was wait for the perfect moment. Just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it had to be not too high, not too low, but just right.
