Picture: Morning light on the Teton mountain range over aspen tree in autumn, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

It wasn’t all bad storms and grey clouds on my trip. Although that was the condition most of the time, there were pockets of time when the lighting was very nice. This morning started with me arriving at Oxbow bend at 6:20 am, over an hour before sunrise. The parking area was filled with a line of cars and photographers, and I mean filled. However, as the sky started to lighten, I could see the entire eastern horizon was a solid mass of clouds. Yet to the southwest, toward Jenny Lake, I could see a hole in the clouds. I sat in my car, looking at the line of vehicles and crowds of waiting photographers. I heard myself say, “a good photographer goes where the light is.” In that moment, I threw my truck in gear and said, “Fan This…”, and drove off toward where the only visible hole in the cloud was lingering.

The first Teton photo that I showed was taken shortly before this image.
