Photo: A postcard perfect San Francisco Sunset

Picture: Sunset light and fog over San Francisco from the Berkeley Hills, California

Yesterday, I was giving another one of my private custom workshops to a client up in the Berkeley Hills. Originally, I’d hoped to be on a high ridge looking north at sunset, to get nice golden light on the nearby rolling hills and tree filled valleys. Arriving in early afternoon, conditions were prime, although we made note of some clouds coming in from the northwest. I had hoped the clous wouldn’t roll in as fast as it did, but the changing light conditions forced us to re-evaluate our original plans. Rather than being caught high on a backridge and possibly miss a nice sunset over the bay, we decided to gamble that the best light show would be direct to our west over the bay. Boy oh boy, did we gamble correctly. I used to commute over the Berkeley Hills for years when I worked for Galen Rowell, and this was truly one of the best, most classic sunsets over the bay that I’ve ever enjoyed.

Do you always provide light like this on your custom tours? If so, sign me up!

  • That is a stunning photo Gary. Your insight and knowledge of the area definitely paid off. The colors, layers of the scene and sheer drama of the fog add up to one impressive image.
