Photographer in Yosemite ValleyDateline Dec 1st, 2008; Nikon announces the release of the newest flagship body of their DSLR camera bodies, the D3x. Hitting the streets with 24.4 MP and an approximate retail value of $8,000.00+, you can bet there will be some talk comparing the pros and cons between this model, the older D2x (which I use), the D3 & D300, (which are known for low-light handling), and of course, Canon cameras.

And the talk begin with the press release posted at DP Review. There is also a ‘review’ posted by Ken Rockwell. I refuse to dignify his opinion with a link, but he uses words like, “poo”, a sarcastic “Whoppee”, “boring”, and “a big pile of suck”.

If you prefer as slightly more mature opinion, review, or details, check out:
Official Nikon D3x page. For slightly more OC-types, check out NikonRumors, and their announcements, polls, et.

What? You want to see images? Check’em out, including some nature shots by John Shaw. Be patient if you download the enlarged versions.

  • That is an expensive pile of poo!

Are you getting one, or sticking with the D2x? The D2x sounds like a wonderful camera.

Due to the price I think I’d rather get the D700. My uncle just recently got one for the ISO capabilitites.

That dude sounds like an immature child, or an adult idiot.

  • I also read Ken’s strange review, it seemed Nikon somehow personally offended him. There’s a more balanced opinion by Michale Reichmann at Luminous Landscape. Being a photographer who exclusively used 4×5 for nearly 20 years I would love to have a 24 megapixel camera but will have be satisfied with my D200 until prices come down.

  • Mark says:

I was surprised at the initial sticker – if they were the only one in the market and could offer some wiz bang features other than MP, then I could understand a little better. Bottom line is – people will judge it with their wallets. If Nikon isn’t selling up to expectations, I am sure it will come down.

  • If you haven’t seen this yet I highly recommend viewing “Hitler rants about D3X”

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Ron, for now, sticking w/ the D2x. It’s a great beast of a camera, and continues to survive an onslaught of beatings and bashings.

    Cheers.
